How to Cite Electronic Journals With Multiple Authors

MLA style is a format for writing papers in subjects of the humanities and arts, among others. The style dictates the method for citing sources in the paper and works cited pages. Most sources are similar in their style, but for each type of source there is a specific way of writing the citation. The citation can become complicated when adding multiple authors, but following a sure-fire recipe for a correct citation will make the task less stressful.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite electronic resources in your text with the first item from your Works Cited citation. If you know the authors, you will put the authors' last names in the citation. For example, if the article is by Daniel Pinkerton and Marla Howes, you will put "Pinkerton and Howes" in parentheses at the end of your sentence, followed by a period (the period goes outside the final parenthesis). If you have three authors, it will be like "Pinkerton, Howes, and Smith" in parentheses. If you have four or more authors, put the first author listed followed by a comma and "et al." You do not need a page number for any of these, as the source does not have specific pages.

    • 2

Begin the citation for your Works Cited page. The authors' names go first. For the first author listed, write the last name followed by a comma followed by the first name. To list additional authors, write the first name then last name. All authors are separated by a comma, and you must place an "and" before the last author. An example is "Pinkerton, Daniel, Marla Howes, and Buddy Smith." A period is placed after the author listing.

    • 3

Write the article name, if applicable, enclosed in quotations. The period after the title goes inside the quote mark.

    • 4

Write the title of the website or other electronic source in italics. Include a period after the title. If there is a version number, include it after the title.

    • 5

Write the publisher information or the institution linked to the website or source. If a publishing date is available, place a comma after the publisher name and write the date of publication, followed by a period.

    • 6

Write the form of the publication. Most electronic sources will be a webpage, so write "Web" followed by a period. Write the date you accessed the information in the format of day, month and year, followed by a period. MLA no longer requires a URL to be listed in the citation, but you may choose to add the URL at the end of the citation, enclosed by "<" and ">" marks. A full citation of an electronic source by multiple authors is as follows: Pinkerton, Daniel, Marla Howes, and Buddy Smith. "How to Make a Five-Layer Dip." Internet Recipe Archive. Version 2. Internet Culinary Institute, 25 April 2004. Web. 2 Jan. 2011.
