How to Cite a Work with Multiple Authors Using Harvard Style

Harvard style is the most commonly used academic citation method in the world. References and citations are methods of giving credit for concepts and ideas that you use as bases for your own conclusions in your research process. Harvard-style citations use a small note within the text of the paper to direct a reader to more extensive set of details at the end of the text. When you refer to a book with more than one author, you will use those authors' names and either a date or a set of page numbers, depending on your professor's preference, to direct the reader to more detailed information about the source located in a bibliography at the end of the text.

Instructions

    • 1

List the authors in the same order they are listed on the title page, followed by a period. It is important to keep them in the same order because order often indicates degree of contribution to a work. The names should be written last name, first initial and separated by commas. The last name in the list should be preceded by an ampersand. For example, if the authors' names (in order) are Joseph Johnson, Leslie Nedders and Kenzie Lipter, then your citation should at this point read:Johnson, J., Nedders, L. & Lipter, K.

    • 2

Follow the authors' names with the year the book was published and a comma. This information can usually be found on the first few pages of a book, often on the title page. If your book was published in 1987, your citation should at this point read:Johnson, J., Nedders, L. & Lipter, K. 1987,

    • 3

Add the title of the book, followed by another comma. The title should be italicized if possible, but if your word processor will not support this type of formatting, use an underscore to indicate that the title should be underlined. If the name of the book is "Stars and Their Meanings," your citation should now look like this:Johnson, J., Nedders, L. & Lipter, K. 1987, _Stars and Their Meanings_,

    • 4

Follow the title with the name of the publisher and a final comma. Publishing information can generally be found on the inside cover of the book, with the copyright information. If your book's publisher was Jenkins & Sons from Laredo, Texas, your citation will now look like this:Johnson, J., Nedders, L. & Lipter, K. 1987, _Stars and Their Meanings_, Jenkins & Sons,

    • 5

Finish the citation with the city where the book was published and a period. Since Jenkins and Sons is located in Laredo, your finished citation will read:Johnson, J., Nedders, L. & Lipter, K. 1987, _Stars and Their Meanings_, Jenkins & Sons, Laredo.
