How to Cite a Book Compiled By an Editor Using Harvard Style

Harvard style is the most commonly used academic citation method throughout the world. References and citations are methods of giving credit for concepts and ideas that you use to base your own conclusions in your research process. Harvard style citations use a small note within the text of the paper to direct a reader to more extensive set of details at the end of the text. Usually, your reference will include the name of the author of a given piece of work or research. However, sometimes you may choose to use a compilation of works strategically assembled by an editor. In this instance, you will need to give the editor credit in your bibliography.

Instructions

  1. How to Cite a Book Compiled By an Editor Using Harvard Style

    • 1

List the name of the editor, followed by "(ed.)". You should list the name in the order last name, first initial. If the editor of the book is named Monty Lawrence, then your citation will start out:Lawrence, M. (ed.)

    • 2

Follow the editor's name with the year of publication and a comma. This can usually be found on the inside cover along with other publishing and copyright information. For example, if your book was published in 1976, then your citation should now read:Lawrence, M. (ed.) 1976,

    • 3

List the title of the book with another comma. The title should be italicized. If your word processor cannot support this type of formatting, then use an underscore to indicate that the title should be underlined. For example, if the title of the book is "Gnostic Thoughts on Shakespeare," then your citation should read:Lawrence, M. (ed.) 1976, _Gnostic Thoughts on Shakespeare_,

Add the name of the publishing company and a final comma. This information will often be located on the inside cover or on the back of the book. If your book was published by Letterman's Friends in Denver, Colorado, then at this point your citation should look like this:Lawrence, M. (ed.) 1976, _Gnostic Thoughts on Shakespeare_, Letterman's Friends,

    • 5

Finish with the city where the book was published and a period. It is not necessary to include the state or country. Your finished citation should look like this:Lawrence, M. (ed.) 1976, _Gnostic Thoughts on Shakespeare_, Letterman's Friends, Denver.
