How to Cite a Specific Edition of a Book Using Harvard Style

Sometimes, when a book is very popular, it may be published repeatedly with major or minor changes and additions. These revisions make each publication a different edition, even though the book and its contents remain largely the same. When using one of these books as a source for a research or term paper, you must include information about which edition of the book was used so that a reader can identify the specific source should they wish to do so. Here is how to cite different editions of books and other unusual types of source material using Harvard style, which is ubiquitous throughout the academia.

Things You'll Need

  • Author's name

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the author's name, followed by a period. The name should be listed in the order of last name, first initial. If the book was written by Heather Tagsher, then your citation should begin: Tagsher, H.

    • 2

Follow the name of the author with the year of publication and a comma. This information is usually available on the inside cover or the title page. For example, if your book was published in 1987, then your citation should now look like this: Tagsher, H. 1987,

    • 3

Add the title of the book and another comma. The title should be italicized. If your word processor will not support italics, then use an underscore symbol to indicate that the title should be underlined. If your book is titled "How to Make Your Computer Work for You," then your citation should now look like this: Tagsher, H. 1987, _How to Make Your Computer Work for You_,

    • 4

Follow the title with the edition of the book and a comma. You can abbreviate edition "edn" and use numerals to indicate the edition number. For example, if you used the third edition of the book, then your citation will now look like this: Tagsher, H. 1987, _How to Make Your Computer Work for You_, 3rd edn,

    • 5

Finish with the publisher of the book and the city where the book was published. Follow the name of the publisher with a comma and the city with a period. For example, if the book was published in Atlanta, Georgia, by Southern Publishers, then your finished citation will look like this: Tagsher, H. 1987, _How to Make Your Computer Work for You_, 3rd edn, Southern Publishers, Atlanta.
