How To: MLA Citation With Authors in an Essay

An essay is a less common resource for many papers but it still needs to be cited. MLA style, created by the Modern Language Association, is usually used with humanities papers and considers an essay to be like a chapter in an anthology. There are specific rules you need to follow to correctly cite your essay reference. Be sure to cite the essay both in-text and on a works cited page. In the case of multiple authors of a single essay, the key is to include all authors' names.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the necessary information. You need the authors of the essay, the title of the essay, the page numbers and the publication information. If the essay came from an edited book or anthology, you need the book title and editor as well.

    • 2

Cite multiple authors in-text by listing the authors' last names and the page number in parentheses. For example: (Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe 39).

    • 3

Cite the essay on the works cited page as author, title, book title (in italics), editors, publisher, publishing date, the page numbers and the medium. For example: Dewey, Adam, Henry Cheatham, and Donald Howe. "What Not to Name a Law Firm." Lawyer Humor: Essays on Traditional Lawyer Jokes. Ed. James Smith: Chicago: Laughter Publishing House, 2003. 72-83. Print.
