How to Write the References in Your Book

When writing a book, it is important to include the books, articles and websites from which you gathered information. This is called your bibliography and it is included in the back of your book after any appendices and before the index. All of the information in your bibliography should be listed alphabetically, by author, no matter what type of publication it is. It is important to include a bibliography to give credit to those who have done research and writing before you on any given topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the author's name, with his last name first, then the first name separated by a comma and then a middle initial or middle name. A designation such as Jr. or Sr. can be included, but other designations and degrees should not, such as Dr. or Rev. An example is Kennedy, John F.

    • 2

Include the title of the book or article after the name of the author, separated by a period. Book titles need to be underlined and article titles, whether from a print or online publication, should be placed in quotation marks.

    • 3

Separate the title from the publication name with a period, if it is an article, and then include the date of publication. For books, include the year. For example: Kennedy, John F. Profiles in Courage. 1961. New York: Harper & Row.

    • 4

Include page numbers for an article or essay from a magazine or journal, but not from a book, unless it is an anthology. Page numbers are included after the date of publication for a magazine, as in: Smith, Charles. "Examples of Great Bibliographies." Time Magazine (underlined). Jan. 2010: 32-37.
