How to Write a Multipage Report

Whether you are writing a report for a course you are taking or for your employer, a report generally will be multiple pages. Because a report needs to be well-organized, give yourself plenty of time to write it. Do not wait until the night before you need to turn it in to your instructor or supervisor to start it. Instead, give yourself plenty of time to write each section of the report and to proofread it.

Instructions

    • 1

Type a separate title page for your report. Title the report. Add your name, and include your company name or the title of the course for which you are completing the multipage document. Include the date it is due.

    • 2

Write an abstract for your report. This is a short sentence or a paragraph or two that summarizes the topic of your report. Upon reading the abstract, a person should know what the report is about and whether they want to read it.

    • 3

Add a table of contents. This will likely be filled in at the end, but leave a space for it on the third page.

    • 4

Introduce your report topic in greater detail in your introduction. Include why you are writing about the topic. For a school assignment, this would be why you chose the topic you chose, and for work, the introduction should include what you are accomplishing by writing the report.

    • 5

Present the details of your report at length in a discussion section. This section includes how you conducted your research for the report, how you gathered the necessary data and how you analyzed the data.

    • 6

Add any relevant charts, tables or graphs that support your report topic to the next section.

    • 7

List your conclusions and recommendations based on the data you gathered and analyzed for the report and the research you conducted.

    • 8

Include appendices in your report to list any research materials that you used while completing the report.
