The Steps in How to Organize Your References in a Works Cited Page

The Modern Language Association refers to the bibliography section of research papers as Works Cited. The Works Cited page includes all reference material used to generate your paper, whether the paper is one page or 1,000 pages long. While in-text citations are organized according to the appearance of referenced material in the body of the paper, the Work Cited page is organized alphabetically to help the reader locate a reference with speed and accuracy. The MLA Works Cited page also requires a few additional organization considerations.

Instructions

    • 1

Center the title Works Cited on the first line of the page.

    • 2

Double-space the Works Cited page. Do not add additional spaces between the Works Cited title or individual references.

    • 3

Type the first line of a reference flush with the left margin. Indent subsequent lines of an individual reference by five spaces to create a hanging indent. Some word processing programs have this function built in so you do not need to add the spaces manually.

    • 4

List all references alphabetically according to the last name of the author or the first word of a title (other than a, an or the) for works with no author. For example, list Audrey, Sam; The Greatest Show on Earth; Jones, Christopher; Waters, Joseph and A Watery Grave.

    • 5

Arrange two or more works by the same author alphabetically by title of the work. Replace the authors name with three hyphens without spaces (---) for the second and subsequent entries and include a period after the dashes.

    • 7

List solo publications first and collaborative works second where the same author is listed first. Only replace the list of authors’ names with dashes if the Works Cited list includes more than one work by the exact same set of authors.
