How to Write a Works Cited Page in APA Format

The rules of APA formatting require that every research paper contains a bibliography, sometimes known as a "Works Cited" page because it lists the works, sources or references that were cited in the paper. In APA style, the Works Cited page is usually called the reference list. This bibliography allows readers to find the paper's original sources for further reference, and it helps writers maintain scholarly standards of research and avoid plagiarism by providing proper attribution.

Instructions

  1. Formatting the Page

    • 1

Double-space the entire Works Cited list.

    • 2

Write "References" at the top of the page, centered, using standard text (not bolded or printed in large letters).

    • 3

Begin the first line of each bibliographic entry flush left (not indented). Any following lines should be indented one-half inch.

    • 4

Make sure the entries are separated only by a double line space, not by any extra paragraph spacing.

    • 5

      Arrange the entries alphabetically.

    Formatting Each Entry

    • 6

Write the name of the author (last name first, if it is a person), ending with a period.

    • 7

Write the source's year publication; enclose it in parentheses. After the parentheses, place a period.

    • 8

Type the title of the source, and then type a period. Format the title in italics, unless the source is an article.

    • 9

State the location of the publisher, followed by a colon and then the publisher's name. Or, if the source is an article, then write the name of the journal, magazine or newspaper, in italics. Write a comma, and then cite the volume and issue numbers (if there are any). After another comma, write the page number or numbers on which the article appears in the periodical. Conclude with a period.
