How to Do a Works Cited of an Email Address

An email address is referenced as a form of personal communication in American Psychological Association (APA) style or Modern Language Association (MLA) style. APA only requires an in-text citation for an email address but MLA's citation rules require extra information. The information in the email is the data used for the research, not the address itself, so you need to have the entire email available to reference. Email references are an excellent way to learn additional information that can't be found in a journal article or book resource.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite an email as an in-text citation for APA style. The interviewee, a notation that this was a personal communication and the full date are needed for an APA in-text citation. For example: (C. Kane, personal communication, May 30, 2009). You can also cite the information directly in the text of the paper.

    • 2

Cite emails in-text for MLA style with the author of the message in parentheses. For example: (Morris).

    • 3

Cite the email on an MLA reference list with the author of the email, the subject line, the recipient, the date and the medium. For example: Andrews, Joyce. "Re: Pearl Harbor." Message to John Smith. 23 April 2003. E-mail.
