How to Document Wikipedia in APA Format

Because Wikipedia allows any user to edit the articles on the site, scholars seldom use it as a source in academic papers. If you do use Wikipedia as a reference, however, cite it according to the guidelines for websites in the sixth edition of the "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association." Since you cannot verify the identities of the authors of a Wikipedia article, cite it as you would a source with no author.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the citation with the title of the Wikipedia page. For example, "APA Style."

    • 2

Give the last modification date for the page as the publication date. For example, "(2011, May 8)." Wikipedia lists this date at the very bottom of each page.

    • 3

State the date you viewed the page, the name of the website and the URL for the page. For example, "Retrieved May 10, 2011 from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/APA_style"
