How to Cite With Three Sentences in APA Formant

Creating a block quote using APA formatting is straightforward. There are some simple guidelines, including the minimum number of words required and margins. In order to begin a block quote, the material must be at least 40 words. Oftentimes, three sentences will contain 40 or more words but writers should still count the words, not just the number of sentences, before beginning a block quote in APA formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of words in the desired quote. If the quotation has 40 words or more, it must be formatted as a block quote.

    • 2

Introduce the quotation with the name of the author or authors and the year of publication, ending the phrase with a colon. It will appear as such: "Smith's (2001) research proves:".

    • 3

Begin the quotation on a separate line, without quotation marks. Indent the entire quote 1/2", or five spaces.

    • 4

Continue to double-space as you would the entire essay. Do not add any extra spaces before or after the quote. Type the entire quote. Place the closing period before the in-text citation. It will appear as such: "Smith shows that animals are active. (p. 456)"

    • 5

Press "Enter" and continue the remainder of the paragraph at the original left-hand margin. The block quote should appear as a block in the middle of the paragraph, separate from the rest of the writing.
