How to Cite Large Quotes in APA Format

When you write a paper using the formatting standards of the American Psychological Association, set longer quotes apart from the rest of the text in a block quotation. According to the sixth edition of the APA Publication Manual, direct quotations of 40 or more words should be formatted as a block quote. You can format block quotes using whatever computer word processing program you prefer for writing papers.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the quote on a new line and indent one-half inch from the left margin. Press the "Tab" key in your word processing program to create the indentation. Indent the entire quote in this manner.

    • 2

Indent the first line of any new paragraphs within the quote by an additional half inch.

    • 3

      Double-space the entire quotation.

    • 4

Include the parenthetical citation at the end of the quote, after the final punctuation mark. Format the citation as "(Author or authors, year, page number)," and do not include any punctuation after the final parenthesis. Use an ampersand between the last and next-to-last authors when there are multiple authors. Abbreviate "page" with "p." and "pages" with "pp."

If the author is cited in the text before the block quote, include the year in parentheses after the author's name. Include only the page number in the parentheses at the end of the quote.
