How to Add a Quote From a Website Into an Essay in MLA

The MLA style, developed by the Modern Language Association of America, is a set of guidelines commonly used around the world for writing research papers in the humanities, particularly those concerning the study of languages and literature. To conform to the rigorous standards specified by the MLA, any quotation must be carefully attributed and presented in the appropriate way.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect as much information about the website you wish to quote as it makes available. The MLA standard calls for the following, when applicable: the authors and editors of the page being quoted, title of the article quoted, its version and revision number, publisher's name, date published, date accessed by you, and its URL. If a publisher's name is lacking, use "n.p." instead. If the date published is unavailable, use "n.d." instead.

    • 2

Locate the place in your essay where you want to insert the quote, and include the name of the author either in the sentence itself or in parenthesis. If the specific author is unknown, use the website's name instead. Where applicable, insert the page number in parenthesis as well.

    • 3

Include the website you quoted in the "Works Cited" section of your essay using the following format:

Author's or editor's name. "Title of the article." Website's name. Version number. Publisher's name. Date created. Web. Date accessed. <URL>.

      For example:

Griggs, Brandon. "Steve Jobs praised as Apple's visionary, creative genius." CNN.com. 6 Oct. 2011. Web. 9 Oct. 2011. <http://edition.cnn.com/2011/10/06/us/obit-steve-jobs/index.html>.
