Many universities and colleges exist among the numerous counties in northern Georgia -- there are more than a dozen in the city of Atlanta alone.   1. Northern Georgia College and State University

    • Situated along College Circle in Dahlongega, Northern Georgia College and State University sits near the Blue Ridge Mountains. Among several military colleges in the United States, Northern Georgia College and State University was first established more than 130 years ago shortly after the Civil War. A highly-reputable school in Lumpkin county, it has undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in subjects such as chemistry, art education, business administration, and physical therapy. The facility first went co-ed in 1878.

    Northern Georgia Technical College

    • Equipped with a large-scale recreational and fitness center, Northern Georgia Technical College sits along Highway 197 in Clarksville, Georgia. Just off County Road 203, the northern Georgia college has associate programs in industrial systems technology, environmental horticulture and commercial photography. Students may also receive technical certificates in commercial truck driving, residential wiring and mill operator technology. With on-site diploma programs in air conditioning technology, drafting and automotive collision repair, the school also offers on-line training course.

    Georgia State University

    • Located in Atlanta, Georgia State University was founded more than 90 years ago. This northern Georgia college has numerous undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs -- courses include: health and physical education, hospitality administration and international studies. Located along Peachtree Center Avenue, Georgia State sits virtually in the heart of the city's downtown near Five Points and Margaret Mitchell Square. The university's adjoining research centers perform studies in areas such as bio-medicine and urban health.

    University of Georgia

    • Founded more than 200 years ago, the University of Georgia sits near Interstate 85 and Georgia Highway 316. It is located in Athens, Georgia, approximately one hour from the state's capital. With a wide array of educational programs, this northern Georgia school offers more than 50 different baccalaureate and master's degrees. It also awards professional degrees in veterinary medicine and law.
