VA Driver Improvement Schools

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, a car accident happens every three minutes. As a preventative measure, the state offers a driver improvement program that educates its citizens in safe driving practices. If you're involved in a car accident, participating in a classroom or computer-based driver improvement program is mandatory. You must enroll in a school that provides classroom instruction, however, if you're under 20. Virginia residents can attend a number of state approved driver improvement schools.
  1. New River Valley Driving School

    • New River Valley Driving School offers convenient driver improvement classes throughout the New River Valley, including on the campuses of Virginia Tech and Radford University. Participants in the classes are drivers ordered by the court to attend an eight-hour defensive driving school, students who voluntarily take the class for safe driving points and drivers wanting to reduce automobile insurance rates. The cost of the class is $65.

    Tri-County Skills Center

    • If the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles requires you to attend a driver improvement clinic and you meet the age requirements, you are eligible to take Tri-County Skills Center's approved course online. The cost of the course is $50. It's self-paced and concludes with an online final exam that you must take in person at one one of many designated sites.

    Advantage Driver Improvement School

    • Advantage Driver Improvement School serves court-appointed students as well as those voluntarily improving their driving skills. Its driver improvement classes are available at 10 different locations in Montgomery County. Approved by the state, it also provides a self-paced online course. Both classroom and online courses issue a certificate upon completion. The cost of the classroom course is $65 in advance or $75 at class time. The online course fee is $55.

    Southwest Virginia Community College

    • Those seeking lower insurance rates as well as those assigned by the court are some of the students who attend Southwest Virginia Community College's driver improvement clinic. A certified provider for the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Clinic, it teaches students how to prevent and avoid collisions, including those involving hazardous road conditions. The course is recognized by the Virginia Department of Motor vehicles. It's $75 and takes a full day to complete.
