Schools in Orlando

Orlando might have been just another city in Central Florida's sunbelt region when Walt Disney purchased the land that would one day become his Magic Kingdom in the 1960s. But today, and because of Disney's development of the region, Orlando has grown into a thriving city and tourist mecca. Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Studios and plenty of other attractions draw visitors to the city every year. Orlando also is home to more than 2 million people and numerous schools including Orange County high schools, colleges and universities.
  1. High Schools

    • Orlando is situated in Orange County, Florida. As the fifth largest city in the southeastern United States, the Orlando area is home to many schools including 134 public elementary and middle schools as well as 17 public high schools and 60 private high schools. Thirty-eight of the private high schools are in the city of Orlando, and many are Christian in nature, such as Victory Prep Christian Academy, South Orlando Christian Academy, Orlando Christian Prep and Bishop Moore Catholic High School.

    Community Colleges

    • More than 100 colleges, technical schools, trade institutes and universities are located in Orlando. Valencia Community College is the city's two-year college offering associate's of arts and science degrees as well as technical and career certificates. As of January 2011, Valencia planned to begin offering bachelor of science degrees in radiologic and imaging sciences as well as electrical and computer engineering technology. A variety of other technical and trade schools are located throughout Orlando, such as the Academy of Construction Technology, the Holistic Institute of Massage Therapy, Hotel and Restaurant Training Services, Orlando Tech and the Orlando Culinary Academy.

    Public Universities

    • Orlando's main public university is also one of Florida's largest. The University of Central Florida has an enrollment of more than 55,000 students, which makes it one of the nation's largest universities. The school offers 223 degree programs and gives students from across the nation and around the world an opportunity to earn undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees.

    Private Universities

    • Orlando is also home to a number of private universities offering bachelor's and master's degrees, including some that are specialized such as the innovative Full Sail University. Full Sail offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the study of computer animation, creative writing for entertainment and numerous other programs that prepare students for careers in the music, movie and gaming entertainment industries. Other private universities in Orlando include Everest University and the International Academy of Design and Technology.
