Distance Learning for a Masters in Nutrition

A master's degree in nutrition teaches you the effects of food on a person's health. Most programs take two years to complete if you attend classes full time. Some of the jobs that a student can get once she completes her degree include a dietitian and nutritionist, a medical and clinical laboratory technician and a health counselor.

    • UMassOnline is the online learning system of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst campus. It offers a Master of Public Health in nutrition. This three-year program trains students to work in the public sector in order to address complex issues regarding health and nutrition. The program also addresses the need for services for older people and others who are vulnerable to health risks. The program is made up of classes from graduate-level public health courses, nutrition courses, practicum, and a project or additional courses. Applicants for this program must have an advanced degree in a health-related area or be a registered dietitian. They can also have three to five years of relevant post graduate experience and two courses in nutrition. The tuition fee rate for this program is $575 per credit plus a registration fee per semester of $45 as of 2011.

    University of Bridgeport

    • The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut offers an on-campus and online master's degree in nutrition. This program focuses on functional medicine and the preservation of life through prevention and management of disease. The online program by the University of Bridgeport consists of courses on physiology, biochemistry, macro- and micronutrients, biochemical individuality, human development, functional assessment and nutritional therapeutics. Elective courses are also offered and an online comprehensive exam is required to complete the program. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school or university with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. The tuition fee is $660 per credit hour as of 2011.

    Texas Women's University

    • The department of nutrition and food sciences of the Texas Women's University offers an online master of science in nutrition program. This gives students the flexibility to complete the degree at their own pace, but they must be finished within 6 years. Courses under this program include human nutrition and metabolism, human nutrition and disease, statistics, and elective courses on nutritional sciences, food science and food system administration, and outside nutrition and food sciences. An online written comprehensive examination must be completed by students as well. In order to be accepted into this program, applicants must present an official transcript that shows evidence of prerequisite health and nutrition courses with at least a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale. In addition you must present your scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and a one- to two-page resume providing evidence of work and volunteer experiences related to the health and nutrition field. The tuition fee is $433 per credit hour for Texas residents and $743 per credit hour for nonresidents as of 2011.

    Northeastern University- College of Professional Studies

    • The College of Professional Studies of Northeastern University in Boston has an online program for a Master of Science in applied nutrition. This program provides students with a background in metabolism, health promotion, nutrition, disease prevention and clinical behavior. The core courses for this program include advanced nutrition and metabolism, medical nutrition therapy, research methods in nutrition, health promotion and disease prevention, clinical health behavior change, and a final project. Other related courses include the business and entrepreneurship in nutrition specialization, nutrition education, nutrition and fitness specialization, and obesity and eating disorders. The requirements in order to be accepted to this program are a statement of purpose, a professional resume, two letters of recommendation, an official undergraduate transcript, related coursework, and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. The estimated total tuition fee for this program are $20,960 as of 2011.
