Distance Learning Universities for Creative Writing

The Internet has changed distance education. Yesterday's correspondence courses have morphed into online classrooms with real-time peer-to-peer and professor-student interaction. Online creative writing programs allow writers to earn bachelor's and master's degrees, without the interruptions to family and work life caused by traditional degree programs. Some programs can be completed entirely online, while others require short residencies on or near campus.
  1. Full Sail University

    • Full Sail University offers a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. The fully accredited, online program offers rolling admissions and has no residency requirements. Students in courses such as The Art of Visual Storytelling and The Business of Creative Writing participate in interactive forums and receive online criticism from professors and classmates. Students who have graduated from an accredited college or university, or those currently attending an accredited college or university, may enroll in Full Sail. Tuition for the 48-credit-hour program is $9,933 as of May 2010.

    Southern New Hampshire University

    • Southern New Hampshire University offers a BA in Creative Writing and an MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction. Undergraduate writers can choose between a three-year accelerated plan and a traditional four-year program. Three-year students who enroll in the MFA program can complete both degrees in four years. MFA students must complete Winter (four days at the Mountain View Grand Resort) and Summer (six days at Star Island in the Isle of Shoals) residencies. Tuition is $906 per three-credit course for undergraduates and $1,722 per three-credit course for graduate students. Tuition for active duty military undergraduates is $675 per three-credit course, according to Southern's website.

    Goddard College

    • Goddard College offers online undergraduate and graduate degrees in creative writing. Graduates of the 120-credit undergraduate program receive special consideration when applying to the 48-credit MFA program. Goddard pairs each student with a writing adviser to emulate the relationship between writer and editor. Students study poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, screenwriting and playwriting. Tuition for the undergraduate program is $6,712 per semester and $7,572 per semester for graduate students.
