As of 2009, there were limited opportunities for distance learning Ph.D. programs in epidemiology. The University of Colorado-Denver School of Public Health offers a master's and a Ph.D. distance learning degree in epidemiology. The University of London-External London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine offers certificate and master's distance learning epidemiology classes but does not offer a Ph.D.
Students can pursue online doctoral degrees in public health and other medical subtopics and may be able to obtain similar positions to those available to epidemiology doctoral candidates. Interested students should consider several programs and note that online learning opportunities are expanding rapidly, so more programs may be available soon.
The main advantages of distance learning programs are geographic and cost-cutting. While advanced education is always a significant expense, distance learning cuts down on commuting, books, school fees and other hidden costs of education. Additionally, students pursuing an online degree have greater flexibility in class schedules and work habits, allowing them to remain committed to full- or part-time employment while pursuing their studies.
Students interested in epidemiology can begin their careers without having to relocate to a city offering an on-site program. Many of these students may be able to find work in their post-doctoral work in their geographic area, and by taking advantage of online education, they are able to preserve stability and quality of life.
Interpersonal contact is critical to many epidemiologists. Doctoral candidates will need to know how to work with teammates and how to interact with a variety of people. While students traditionally learn these skills through labs and classes, distance learners will need to seek these skills elsewhere.
Some programs may require students to complete internships. If it isn't required, doctoral students should arrange informal internships by approaching organizations in their area, so they aren't at a disadvantage with traditional students. Distance learners can receive help from the career services center at their university or from faculty members.
