Veterinary Assistance Schools

A veterinary assistant aids veterinary teams with animal care in many ways including bathing and feeding domestic animals, administering medication and completing various office tasks. These assistants work in different environments such as animal shelters, veterinary hospitals and private veterinary clinics. For a person interested in a career as a veterinary assistant, there are schools which offer the training necessary for success.
  1. Pima Medical Institute

    • With 11 campuses in seven different states, Pima Medical Institute, a vocational healthcare school, is committed to the success of all its students and dedicated to providing students with a well-rounded education to ensure that success. For students interested in veterinary assistant training, Pima Medical Institute offers a nine month Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program. This program trains students for an entry-level position in the animal care field. Students attending this program will learn to sterilize surgical and lab equipment, disinfect and clean animal cages and work areas, provide routine post-operative care, administer oral and topical medication and prepare lab samples with supervision.

    Florida Institute of Animal Arts

    • Florida Institute of Animal Arts, located in Winter Park, Fla., trains individuals for careers as veterinary assistants. Florida Institute of Animal Arts provides two programs for students. Veterinary Assistance Program I teaches students basic skills, knowledge and abilities for entry-level positions. Veterinary Assistance Program II expands on Program I, and includes instruction on basic computer skills, large animals, equine, exotics, pocket pets, reptiles and avian veterinary care. Students attend Program II after completion of Program I for a more in-depth education, however completion of both programs is not required. Both programs include lecture, laboratory and externships, as well as a diploma upon graduation.

    Animal Behavior College

    • Animal Behavior College is a vocational school with programs specializing in animal care career education and training. For students pursuing a career as a veterinary assistant, Animal Behavior College offers an alternative Certified Veterinary Assistant training program. The home study portion of the program includes educational videos, study guides, and comprehensive textbooks on basic animal care knowledge. Students in this phase are appointed a personal program manager who will guide, counsel and grade exams. After completing this phase, students work in a veterinary hospital with a veterinarian or other veterinary medicine personnel for practical experience.

    Professional Veterinary Assistant School

    • Professional Veterinary Assistant School, located in Foothill Ranch, Calif., educates and trains students to become veterinary attendants and assistants. For students interested in veterinary care, this school offers a 12-month Veterinary Assistant program. This program prepares students to work as a veterinary doctor or technicians assistant. Previous veterinary introductory courses or previous experience working in a veterinary hospital is recommended.
