Fast Way to Get Your GED

Continuing your education is a great first step in establishing a successful future in the corporate world. If you don't have a high school diploma, obtaining a General Education Diploma (GED) is the best option. Most colleges and employers require that you have a high school diploma or equivalency. Family and work make it difficult to devote a whole lot of time to your studies, but getting your GED does not have to be as time consuming as you may think.

      Find out the requirements for taking the GED test in your state. Most states require that you be 17 years old or older. Candidates that are below the age of 17 may take the exam if certain documents are provided. The required documents are a waiver document from the last school attended along with parent's or legal guardian's consent or a Waiver Application Form signed with an authorization from a notary public.

      Prepare for the exam by getting a GED prep book, available at most libraries and book stores. You may also study for the test by registering at any online GED test prep website. Most sites offer a prep test to assist you in determining the areas that need the most focus, to assure that you successfully pass the exam. The GED test consists of five sections: Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Writing and Reading. Studying for the test is not required but is recommended to familiarize you with the test contents, requirements and expectations in advance.

      Call the GED hotline at (800) 626-9433 to find a local testing center in your area. A representative will locate the testing centers closest to your home and provide you with available dates and times that the exams are given. Register for the exam by visiting the nearest testing center and paying the required exam fee (fees vary by state). The average cost is about $40 per test. Ask about available scholarships and fee waivers.

      Get an adequate amount of sleep the night before the exam and eat a healthy breakfast so you will be sharp, focused and ready to test. GED testing centers have strict rules and guidelines. Arrive at the testing facility at least 30 minutes early on the day of the exam. If you arrive late you will not be permitted to test, and your testing fee will be forfeited. No items are allowed in the testing area, including food, cellphones or handbags. A picture i.d, social security card and proof of residency is required on the date of the exam. All testing instruments will be provided by the administrator before the start of the test.
