How to Create a Cover Sheet for a Term Paper

When an instructor assigns you a term paper, chances are he expects you to create a cover sheet, also called a "title page," as well. The cover sheet is a simple element of a standard term paper that you can put together in a few minutes. APA (American Psychological Association) style is common for academic papers. The cover sheet is considered the first page of your term paper so it must include the page number. The heading on the cover sheet will appear on all of your pages throughout the document.

Instructions

    • 1

Press "Enter" on your keyboard a few times to position your cursor in the very middle of the blank first page of the document. Some word processing programs allow you to change the vertical alignment for this one page only to "Centered" (check your "Page Setup" or similar option).

    • 2

Set your line spacing preference to "double spaced," as it will be for the rest of the term paper. Set the font of the cover page text to the same size and type as the rest of your paper (preferably a 12-point, Times font face).

    • 3

Type in the title of your paper in title-case. Limit the title of your term paper to 12 words long or less.

    • 4

Enter the author's full name on the next line under the title.

    • 5

Go down another line and type in the full name of the class, including the subject, semester, and section as it's written on your course syllabus. The line after that should contain your professor's full name.

    • 6

End the title page with the full date (month spelled out, day, and year) on the final line. Select all of the words and center them on the page.
