How to Format a Table of Contents Page for a Term Paper

A term paper is often long and complicated, providing a detailed, critical analysis of a topic in usually ten pages or more. Having a properly formatted table of contents page in your term paper helps organize all of your hard work and research and helps readers find a particular section of your term paper quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide your term paper into sections and subsections, including, at the minimum, the introduction, body, conclusion, end notes (if you are not using footnotes or other explanatory notes), and bibliographic information. Other sections could be subheadings for different parts of the body of your term paper, a glossary or a foreword.

    • 2

Center or left justify the title "Table of Contents" at the top of the page.

    • 3

Leave two lines of space below the title, and list your introduction or foreword as the first entry in the table of contents. Add each successive entry in the order it appears in the paper. Capitalize the first letter of each main entry. Do not capitalize the rest of the letters in the entry unless directed to do so by your teacher or unless the word is a proper noun. Use two blank lines between each entry to help readers more easily identify sections of the paper.

    • 4

Type a line of periods from the last letter of the last word in each entry to the right margin of the paper. At the end of the line, type the page where that particular section can be found in the paper.

Keep all the page numbers right justified. It will be necessary to use a different number of periods on each entry to keep the numbers aligned against the right margin.

    • 5

Put the main headings in bold font, or indicate that the main headings are different than subheadings in some similar way. For example, you could indent subheadings a few spaces from the left margin to be situated slightly right of the main headings, or you could italicize them.
