How to Create a Title Page for a College Research Paper

You have researched, written and revised an extensive treatment of a complicated subject, yet one thing remains: typing the document's cover page, the first page that any reader will see. Your professor has probably assigned a specific documentation format, such as American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA) or the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS). Neither APA nor MLA style demands a cover page for undergraduate work. Nevertheless, a well-designed cover page makes a positive impression on instructors before grading.

Instructions

    • 1

Type a shortened version of the paper's title and page 1 in the upper right corner for an APA cover page. Capitalize the first letter of only important words in the title. Then, scroll down to the page's center and type the full title, again capitalizing the first letter of important words. Approximately two inches from the bottom margin, center and type: your name, the course name, instructor's name and date. Double-space the lines.

    • 2

Type the paper's title in the page's center for an MLA style cover page. Capitalize the first letter of significant words in the title. Approximately two inches from the bottom margin, center and type your name, course name, instructor's name and date. Double-space the lines. Do not number the cover page in MLA style.

    • 3

Type the paper's title, centered in the page's middle, for Chicago style. Approximately two inches below the title, type your name, centered. Then, approximately two inches below your name, center and type the course's title, instructor's name and date. Double-space the lines at the bottom of the page.
