How to Learn Gaelic with Audio

The Gaelic language can be learned through the use of audio materials such as CDs, podcasts, websites and DVDs. Gaelic is a Celtic language that has varieties in both Scotland and Ireland. It is still spoken by some individuals in Scotland, Ireland, Nova Scotia and the U.S. but has become more rare over the years as English has become more prevalent. Learning Gaelic can help you to better understand the history, culture and music of the people of the Gaels.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase audio CDs for the Scottish or Irish version of Gaelic. They have similarities but are different languages overall, so it is important to decide which version you wish to study. If you do not wish to use CDs, find Gaelic audio lessons on the Internet. Podcasts may be available that you can download to your MP3 player to take with you on the go.

    • 2

Listen to the audio material for 30 minutes to one hour per day, depending on your attention span. Do not listen to the material once your attention has run out as you will not be learning effectively at this point. Break the listening sessions into shorter sessions throughout the day if attention is a problem for you.

    • 3

Repeat the audio material out loud. You will not be able to learn without verbal repetition of the words and phrases. Listen to the audio in a private location so you can repeat everything that is said out loud. You can do this at home or in the car during your daily commutes to work or school.

    • 4

Replicate the accents, sounds and rhythms of the audio as you repeat the words and phrases out loud.
