Listen to the sounds of the Portuguese alphabet to learn the pronunciation of its sounds. (See Resource 5.) Listen to other recordings of Portuguese to learn how letters are pronounced in different sequences. Try to read a text of something you listen to so you can learn how to produce the sounds when you read words in Portuguese. (See Resources.)
Begin learning individual words and useful phrases. (See Resource 2.) You'll start to build your Portuguese vocabulary. Try to create as many original phrases as possible using the words and phrases you learn. In this way, you'll be producing the language on your own, and you're more likely to remember what you've learned.
Join an online language exchange. You'll help other people around the world learn English, and, in return, you can chat online with a person who speaks Portuguese. This will help increase your conversational skills and increase your fluency. (See Resource 4.)
Hire a personal tutor when your language ability plateaus. You will get personalized attention appropriate for your level of Portuguese. You can also pay for whole courses taught by Portuguese teachers where you can interact with other students. (See Resource 5.)
