Sign up for an introductory course in Portuguese at your university. If you are not a full-time student, you can usually take a class or two part-time or in adult education program. A class would give you the basics of the Portuguese language and the culture. Ask your teacher if you can meet for one-on-one lessons.
Join a Brazilian or Portuguese student group at the university. Most universities have a large number of foreign students, and they often create groups for students from their home country to socialize with. Joining one of these groups would offer a great opportunity to meet other students and learn their language.
Participate in Portuguese activities. Foreign students groups from Brazil or other Portuguese-speaking countries often have social gatherings, dinners or celebrate their home holidays. You can learn about their culture and practice your Portuguese.
Watch Portuguese-language films, such as "Central Station" or "Central do Brasil." Many award-winning foreign films are played at the university's film department for students, and watching a Portuguese film will help your language skills. After the film, you can have discussions with classmates and practice the film's dialogue to practice your Portuguese.
Host a Portuguese university student at your home. Many university have exchange programs, and you can learn much more Portuguese with a native speaker living with you. The student will learn English and American culture and you will learn all about his culture.
