The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry's Ranger School began enrolling students in 1912. Its graduates earn associates degrees in Forest Technology and Land Surveying Technology and can then transfer to a related bachelor program. Three types of applicants are admitted: high school students, current SUNY-ESF students or students already enrolled in another college program. A few of the courses in the degree include Tree and Forest Biology, Forest Ecology, Silviculture and Boundary Surveying. The total curriculum is two years.

People interested in joining the forest ranger profession but don't want to commit to two years of schooling can enroll in the Park Ranger Training Program at Northern Arizona University, an intensive ten-week to thirteen-week program (depending on spring or fall enrollment) where classes are held five days a week, all day long. Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion of seasonal law enforcement granted by the National Park Service and recognized by state park systems. Only 26 students may enroll per semester. Three days a week, students have an hour and a half of fitness training. Classes may include Inclusive Recreation, Wildland Recreation Management and Community and Commercial Recreation Management.

Aspiring forest rangers that would like to go a little further for their education can apply to The Maritime Forest Ranger School at Fredericton in New Brunswick, Canada (which admits students from Canada, the US and overseas). The two-year program has trained forest rangers for 59 years and includes a summer internship/practicum. Students who appreciate small classroom settings will find that Maritime enrolls only 50 students a year. Classes include Ground Vegetation Identification, Wildfire Suppression, Non-Timber Forest Products I and Urban Forestry. Students receive a Diploma in Forest Technology. An Advanced Diploma in Forest and Fish & Wildlife Technology is also available, requiring an extra year of coursework.
