Swahili Language Schools

More than 50 million people speak Swahili, making it the most spoken African language in the world, according to ELCT Language & Orientation School. Swahili is commonly spoken in northern Mozambique, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and areas in the south of Somalia, eastern Congo and Kenya. If you're interested in learning Swahili, whether for business purposes or because you'll be living in one of these countries, there are several language schools that can provide instruction.

The school also provides orientation training to those new to Tanzania, and sells books to help you practice your Swahili skills. An internship placement program allows students to gain direct experience in a Tanzanian non-governmental organization. The standard courses train students to speak, read and write in Swahili. The beginner's course spans three weeks and provides a basic ability to communicate in Swahili. The three-week intermediate course is designed for students to learn to sustain a conversation, and the two-week advanced course teaches students to communicate in almost any situation. Students are awarded a certificate upon completion of the full course.

There are two courses offered: Swahili level 1 and Swahili level 2. The first level introduces the language and incorporates a historical and cultural background. Students learn basic greetings and begin to acquire a vocabulary in Swahili. Students completing this level will gain the ability to speak and read short sentences in Swahili. The second level is an advanced course that introduces future tense, infinitives and time to broaden a student's grasp of Swahili. Students completing this level will be able to have more complex conversations in a wide range of topics.
