International learners of English have a variety of opportunities to learn English from specially trained teachers working in various countries around the world for U.S. embassies, consulates or U.S.-supported organizations. ESL learners must contact or locate an English teaching facilitator in their region for assistance in establishing a course of education. (See Reference 1.)
Each U.S. state has departments or organizations that assist ESL learners in their endeavors to learn the English language. International centers, departments of education and state agencies designed to assist immigrants in assimilation to the U.S. way of life have access to local resources, goodwill ambassadors and tutors who are able to assist new English language learners.
The public library is home to a variety of resources that ESL learners can use to become more independent and capable in using the English language. Some major metropolitan public libraries, like the New York Public Library, have access to online ESL education courses which they let the public use without charge, as well as other resources. (See Reference 2.)
ESL learners can learn faster by focusing on a particular area or topic, learning key vocabulary and asking questions about grammar in classes at their local public library. The best way to learn a language is to use it and not be afraid to experiment and ask questions. Most major libraries offer classes in learning the English language. Libraries are also great places to find tutors and organizations that provide free language learning services.
