Case Western Reserve University, about 5 miles east of downtown, is the host of this center of English language education. Some of the programs offered include Semi-Intensive English, English for Academic Purposes and American Explorer. Instruction takes place in daily classes over four weeks. Students are placed according to ability (beginner, intermediate, advanced, master) and evaluated at the end of the session. The cost of instruction ranges from $1,150 to $1,640, as of January 2011.
The Intensive English Language program (IELP) at Cleveland State University offers courses emphasizing core skills such as Integrated Reading and Writing, Grammar, and Integrated Listening and Speaking. Classes are offered in full or part-time 15 week fall and spring semesters and a 12 week summer session.
Cuyahoga Community College (also known as "Tri-C") offers ESL classes for international students on F-1 visas and U.S. residents seeking to master English as a second language. Potential applicants should, after completing the application, take a placement test on campus and then arrange for an interview with one of the testing evaluators. International students should first speak to the international student coordinator and then go about applying for an F-1 visa.
The Adult Basic and Literacy Program (ABLE) provides free classes in such subjects as English language classes and conversation. Courses are offered in three or four morning, afternoon and evening sessions per week. Registration and a placement test are required. Some of the locations where instruction takes place include Cleveland suburbs such as Cleveland Heights, Beachwood and Mayfield Village.
