Lessons offered online for free are aimed at the beginner and usually give the basics of a language. Lessons are focused on grammar, vocabulary and tenses. Some websites offer some listening exercises so the student can hear the English spoken correctly. These lessons are typically "taster" lessons, offered by commercial language school websites who offer more structured programs for a fee, or on websites that sell language books.
Classes are sometimes offered in places such as public libraries to teach English to immigrants. These are set up by the city departments and information can be found through local immigration services, adult literacy services or from the public libraries themselves. The lessons can be in a group or sometimes through one-on-one tutoring. Prospective students do not need to be American citizens to take these classes and students do not usually have to produce documentation to enroll. Registration for the classes is generally done in person at the center where the class will be held. The student may have to take an initial test so he can be assigned to a suitable level of teaching.
Religious institutions may also offer free ESL classes at their church locations. The classes can be for all skill levels and students may not have to be of the same denomination of the church to participate. Some churches offer free transport to and from the classes and encourage participation in other church activities. The church may also offer nursery facilities or children's activities for free or for a fee.
In some areas, community organizations offer free classes. These classes may be held in local high schools, in community centers or in public libraries. The classes may be beginner, intermediate or advanced. Information about these classes may be available from public libraries.
