For sign language, private one-on-one lessons are available. The lessons can take place either at home or on campus at the school.
LaGuardia Community College is a public New York City institution that has an extensive American Sign Language program. LaGuardia Community College has a five-course sequence that centers around effective communications with individuals that are hearing-impaired. The course's elements include information regarding deaf culture, ASL grammar, sign development and appropriate facial expressions and gestures. The college also organizes a sign language introduction workshop which has a duration of 1.5 hours.
New York University's Steinhardt School, which focuses on human development, education and culture offers a minor in American Sign Language. The ASL minor is part of the University's Applied Psychology program, and consists of four levels. The program aims to assist students in acquiring knowledge and insight regarding deaf individuals, as well as their culture and language.
