Language Schools for Portuguese

Portuguese is a romance language that spread worldwide after Portugal became a colonial empire in the 15th century. Learning this language will open up communication with individuals who speak it. Across the United States, there are a number of language schools that teach Portuguese.

    • The Boston Language Institute is a diverse language school that has taught over 140 languages since it was founded in 1981. Portuguese is one of these languages. It is offered to both individuals and companies. There are five levels of Portuguese instruction that address both verbal and written communication in addition to a course in conversational Portuguese. Courses are flexible in the amount of time they run (90-120 minutes) and their frequency, though the school recommends 20 hours of classes per week for private instruction. Corporate classes are taught on campus or at the students' company.

    Language Door Los Angeles

    • The Language Door School in Los Angeles has three beginners courses in Portuguese, three intermediate courses and advanced classes. The school offers various scheduling choices. Weekly courses that offer a more casual learning schedule are available. For those students interested in quickening their study, there is also an immersion schedule that offers more class time per week. Finally, there is a crash course option. This weeklong course meets Monday through Friday with five hours of class time each day. Portuguese lessons are available for kids as well.

    New York University

    • New York University has a prestigious and innovative program that teaches not only the Portuguese language, but also Portuguese literature and culture. At the undergraduate level, the Luso-Brazilian major offers Portuguese courses. It requires language, literature and culture classes beyond the intermediate level in Portuguese, which means students acquire advanced language training by the time they graduate. There is also a doctorate program that allows students to master the language and Portuguese literature.

    Florida International University

    • Within the Department of Modern Language at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, is a bachelor's program in Portuguese. Students have a choice of many classes in Portuguese as part of this major. Typical beginner, intermediate and advanced language classes are available in addition to courses that focus solely on grammar and writing Portuguese. Conversation classes are also available. More focused classes include Portuguese business language and Portuguese translation. A summer study abroad program in Brazil is available through the school, where students learn accelerated Portuguese, grammar and writing.
