Located in Raleigh, North Carolina State University is a public institution with more than 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Situated in Durham, Duke University is a private institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Home to more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the university received the ninth-place ranking among all universities in the United States in the "Best Colleges 2011" from "U.S. News and World Report." The university offers a Master of Forestry degree, which requires approximately two years to complete. Students complete coursework in silviculture, forest resources, forest measurements and forest policy and administration. In addition, they participate in travel studies that include on-site learning in forests located throughout North Carolina. Prior to graduation, all students complete a Master's research project or thesis. All Master's students can help offset the cost of tuition through teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a teaching or research assistant to a faculty member or participating in work-study with area forestry companies or agencies. The college does not offer an undergraduate degree in forestry.

Established in 1957, Wayne Community College is a public, two-year institution in Goldsboro, approximately 52 miles southeast of Raleigh. The college offers a Associate of Applied Science degree in forest management technology. The average class size in the program is 10 to 20 students, allowing for a high degree of individualized attention. Required courses for the major include dendrology, woodmanship, soil science, forest measurements, silviculture, tree insects and diseases, agricultural economics, logging and marketing, geographic information systems and agricultural chemistry. The Forestry Department sponsors the Forestry Club, which allows majors to participate in field trips to forests throughout North Carolina. Eligible students can receive federal or state financial aid. Job placement assistance is available.
