Community Colleges With GED Courses Near Vancouver, Washington

The GED exam covers five high school subjects: writing, social science, science, reading and mathematics. It is a 240 question multiple-choice exam with an essay question in the writing section. The exam is administered over 7.5 hours. It is important to note that while the exam is governed by the American Council on Education, each state has its own passing score.

While there is only one community college in Vancouver, Washington offering GED/Adult Basic Skills courses, there are more options within commuting distance in Portland, Oregon.
  1. Clark College

    • Clark College in Vancouver offers Adult Basic Education GED preparation courses at Town Plaza. In order to enroll in the courses, you must be at least 19 years of age; students under 18 require special permission from their zoned school district. You must also undergo a placement exam, held once every morning, to determine the correct course placement. ABE GED courses are held in the morning, afternoon and evening. Each course runs approximately four weeks; consult the current quarter schedule for exact dates. The school recommends that students take one course for each of the five GED exam subject areas. There is no limit to the number of courses you may take per quarter. As of 2010, tuition is $25 per quarter per course. Federal financial aid in the form of grants, work study and loans are available to qualified applicants.

    Mt. Hood Community College

    • Adult Basic Education/GED Preparation courses are offered in both English and Spanish at Mt. Hood Community College. If you need GED courses taught in German, those can be found at both the Gresham and Maywood Park campuses. You must be at least 18 years of age to enroll in a GED course--under 18 requires written permission from the student's zoned school district--and have taken an assessment test or passed one of the new GED subject exams within the previous 12 months in order to enroll. Admission paperwork is also required prior to orientation.

      Tuition is $35 per quarter for each course taken, as of 2010. Each quarter lasts approximately four weeks; consult the current quarter course catalog for specific dates. The Sequel-7 scholarship is available to students who have taken at least one GED preparation course at Mt. Hood Community College and passed all GED subject exams. The scholarship covers all fees and tuition for one term at MHCC.

    Portland Community College

    • In order to enroll in an Adult Basic Education GED preparation course at Portland Community College, you must be at least 16 years of age and participate in a two-part orientation and placement session. The school has four campus locations, at Sylvania, Rock Creek, Cascade or Southeast. You must fill out an application form, either on-line or at your chosen campus location, at least 24 hours before attending an orientation and placement session.

      Tuition per GED course is $25-$45 per 10-week session, as of 2010. Courses are offered in the mornings and evenings throughout the week. Portland Community College also offers GED courses in Spanish. GED courses in Spanish follow the same schedule and tuition rates as those offered in English.
