Located in the city of Boston, this school has 11,500 students registered for Spring 2010; it is the largest of the community colleges located near Newton, and the most international in terms of its student body. With students from 103 countries, Bunker Hill considers itself one of the most diverse schools in New England. Its main campus is located in the historic Charlestown neighborhood of Boston. A branch campus is in Chelsea, and there are five satellite campuses. According to the college, it offers the lowest comprehensive tuition and fees in the Commonwealth. It also offers midnight classes in English and sociology.

The main campus for this community college, better known as MassBay, is in Wellesley Hills, a historic community that borders Newton. There are three other campus locations. One third of MassBay's students come from three communities: Boston, Framingham and Newton. The rest come from about 170 other Massachusetts cities and towns. Its most popular program is health professions. Total enrollment in 2010 was 5,018.

Massasoit is a midsized community college. One of its campuses is located in Canton, a town in the Greater Boston area. The other campus is in Brockton, which is a half hour south of Newton. The college offers many occupation-specific programs and boasts partnerships with 85 companies and agencies in the area. Popular programs are business administration, liberal arts and visual arts. Massasoit also offers a weekend college.

Middlesex Community College has a total enrollment of over 8,100. One of its campuses is in suburban Bedford, the other in the city of Lowell. More than 88 percent of its students are employed. The college offers 75 degree and certificate programs. It also offers a new weekend college, at which students can earn an accelerated degree in early childhood education.

Located in Danvers, a town on the northeastern coast of Massachusetts, this college enrolls 6910 students. It offers a number of spotlight programs designed to help specific populations. For example, it has a "bridges to the stars" program to help women and minority students who are interested in science, math or technology. It also offers an honors program for students who want to go on to a four-year college.

With an enrollment of 2,329, this is the smallest of the community colleges located near Newton. Roxbury's motto is "Gateway to the Dream." Most of its students come from the Boston area; the college considers its primary mission to serve the diverse Greater Roxbury area and surrounding communities. The largest number of its students are enrolled in the liberal arts program; the next-largest number are in nursing allied health.
