Community Colleges Near Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver, Washington, in Clark County, is 8 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon, and 165 miles south of Seattle, Washington, and within 30 minutes of a small number of two-year public or community colleges. These schools offer programs to prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or university or to begin a career in a variety of fields, such as construction, health care and computer science.

    • Clark College has its main campus on Fort Vancouver Way in Vancouver. With an enrollment of more than 16,000 full- and part-time students, the college is the second largest in the Washington State system of public, two-year post-secondary schools.

      The college grants degrees and certificates in more than 50 areas, including less commonly taught fields likes industrial first aid, meteorology, land surveying, manufacturing technology and horticulture.

      For working students, the college offers a specialized Associate of Arts degree program that only requires class attendance two days per week and qualifies graduates for transfer to a four-year institution. A special program also exists to help students age 50 and older to pursue a degree. The school offers numerous courses online, as well as distance education telecourses for those students unable to attend classes on campus.

      Qualified students can receive government loans and grants, institutional scholarships and work-study placements at Clark College. Job placement assistance is available.

    Portland Community College

    • Portland Community College has three locations in the Portland, Oregon area, the closest of which, the Cascade Campus, is around 6 miles from Vancouver.

      The school has a combined enrollment of more than 87,000 students across its three campuses and offers more than 100 degrees, certificates and diplomas. Among them are less-common courses of study like aviation maintenance, Chicano and Latino studies, e-commerce, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology and sign language interpretation.

      Students can earn course credit by completing community service projects or volunteer work through the service learning program. The college also offers study abroad opportunities, online classes and television-based courses.

      Portland Community College participates in federal financial aid programs and offers scholarships and work-study opportunities. Job placement assistance is available.

      The school offers a child care referral program, and some students can receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of daycare. Two of the campuses have daycare centers, but not the Cascade branch.

    Mt Hood Community College Maywood Park Campus

    • Mt. Hood Community College has its main campus in Gresham, Oregon. Home to around 31,000 students across all of its locations, the college has a branch in Portland, Oregon, approximately 12 miles from Vancouver.

      Called the Maywood Park Campus, it features general education courses in English and mathematics, as well as courses for small business owners on topics like writing business plans and understanding cash flow. The campus also features courses for adults preparing for the GED high school equivalency examination.

      A bookstore and counseling and registration center is on campus. Eligible students can participate in federal financial aid programs.
