West Virginia residents wishing to take the GED test must be a minimum of 16 years old. Students must provide documentation verifying that their original high school graduating class graduated and the signature of a parent or legal guardian if students are under the age of 18. They also must provide passing GED practice test scores. Students are also eligible if their original school removed them or if they began an alternative form of education no less than one month before the test date. Test-takers must also possess a current form of government-issued identification as well as identification showing a student's name and address. The approved forms of ID include those that display the name, photo, address, date of birth and Social Security number. Students of under the age of 16 are not able to take the exam.
The General Educational Test consists of reading, writing, science, social studies, math and reading. There are GED prep courses offered statewide, as the testing procedure is long-lasting---it is more than seven hours long over a two-day period. West Virginia's General Educational Development test is free of charge, proving that students meet certain stipulations. The classes offering GED prep and basic skills preparations classes are free of charge, and students should take them before embarking on the testing process. Students are obligated to take and pass the GED practice test, with scores of 410 per section and 2250 overall. Upon doing so, they receive the Free General Educational Development Test Scholarship. For those who fail one or more test areas, basic skills assistance will provide further tutoring to counter the deficit. Once a student passes the test, she will receive the scholarship.
