Requirements for the GED Test in Chicago

High school isn't for everyone, as some people were home schooled, needed to work or had personal problems. Rather, some students find taking the General Educational Development test to be the right option for them. In Chicago, taking the GED is much like it is in the rest of Illinois, with both English and Spanish language versions of the test offered.
  1. Eligibility

    • To take the GED, you must be at least 18 years old, and your equivalent high school class must have already graduated. To take the test in Illinois, you must have been a resident of the state for at least six months. If you have already earned a high school degree, you are not eligible to take the GED.

    Content

    • In Illinois, the GED consists of six portions: Language Arts: Writing; Social Studies; Science; Language Arts: Reading; Mathematics; and the Illinois State Constitution Test.

    Cost

    • The fee for first-time takers of the GED is $50 in Illinois. the fee to retake the Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and Language Arts: Reading portions are $10 each, while the Language Arts: Writing section is $15. Retaking the Illinois State Constitution Test is free.

    Testing Locations

    • After registering to take the test, students can choose a location to take the test. The test must be taken in-person at set times--an online version of the GED is not offered. The test is administered at 13 locations throughout the Chicago area, each taking place in a school of some sort.

    Passing Score

    • Students must score at least 410 on each segment of the test, and earn a cumulative score of 2,250 to pass.
