Lean Six Sigma Training & Consulting

Lean Six Sigma is a combined business method initially designed to improve the company’s manufacturing processes. However such method has extended to other types of business processes. As lean Six Sigma implementations in businesses continue to flourish, a number of organizations in the consulting and training industry mastered on the Six Sigma concept and method to offer different Six-Sigma “branded” training packages and consultancy.
  1. Background

    • Six Sigma as a metric measurement is defined as 3.4 defects per million opportunities. As a method, it utilizes data and statistical analysis to identify and eliminate defects in the manufacturing and service processes. This is turn improves the overall operational performance of an organization. A defect is also defined as any output that does not meet the client’s specification and standard. Lean is another methodology that accelerates the speed rate of service and manufacturing, and consequently decreases the overall process cost by eliminating the waste.

    Necessity

    • Lean Six Sigma has evolved into a methodology which needs an organized team that is responsible for implementing Lean and Six Sigma processes. The team members, as well as the team leader, must be trained in different Lean and Six Sigma strategies and concepts. The training includes using appropriate measurement and measurement tools, developing communication and relationship skills to serve the internal and external suppliers and customers’ needs. Trainings can take place on-site in the consultancy firm’s classrooms with certified instructors. Lean and Six Sigma online courses are also available.

    Objectives

    • Consulting and training on these two strategies aim to achieve complementing and long -term results. Lean method training aims to eliminate steps and activities that do not have value for the business. Six Sigma focuses on increasing the quality of the remaining procedures with value. Lean ensures that only the right activities are being worked on while Six Sigma makes certain that the activities that are initially doing are properly. Lean established the value flow and Six Sigma enables the flow of the value runs smoothly free from obstacles.

    Certification

    • In the 1980’s, Bill Smith formulated the Six Sigma methodology for Motorola, Inc., in the U.S. Six Sigma is a registered trademark of such company. However Six Sigma is widely used by other consulting and training firms. Motorola as a pioneer provides their own training and certification programs for Six Sigma. There is no single authorized body that standardizes Six Sigma certification. In most cases companies will put more value to certificates attained from prominent Six Sigma businesses like Motorola, GE and Allied Signal. Certification from second tier consultancy firms may hold less value.

    Levels

    • The level of Six Sigma training course determines the accreditation of the trainee. These levels are according to the duties and expertise of the individual in implementing Six Sigma and Lean processes. The level classification is borrowed from the martial arts belt levels. The black belt level is for team leaders of the Lean Six Sigma processes team. The master black belt is awarded to someone who possesses high qualifications in practicing the Six Sigma method. Master Black belts supervise Six Sigma activities from advanced perspective of organization and development. The other color belts such as green and yellow are given to team members who have specific duties on Six Sigma projects.
