Through the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), the U.S. Department of Education has allocated and distributed funding throughout the United States specifically for adult study grants. Programs and grants are geared toward providing adults with basic education, GED, and English language acquisition. These Federal funds are available at the state level, so interested applicants must contact the office of their State Director of Adult Education. (See Resources for a link to contact details in all U.S. states.) Other grants may be available at the state level so be sure to inquire about a full list of adult study grants available in your state.

There are many private organizations that provide grants for adults to study. Often this type of grant is only available if you live in that same state. One such organization is the Blanche Fischer Foundation (BFF), which provides a variety of grants to disabled people in Oregon. Educational grant requests are considered. Another state specific adult study grant is the Henderson Scholarship Fund in New Jersey. The J.S. Henderson Scholarship Fund is for high school graduates (GED accepted) over age 21 who are enrolled or are in the process of enrolling for a "career-related program of study." This grant is an excellent example of a local, specialized grant as applicants must be a resident of Somerset or Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It is worth investigating what local grants may be available where you live.

The world-famous Fulbright program has several grants suited to adults wishing to further their studies. Programs range in scope, but through these grants adults can further their education through a year of study abroad. The U.S. Students Program in particular is suited to college seniors, professionals and graduate students who want to study in another country. The Fulbright also has a program for adult musicians to study music abroad.
