Texas Electrician Schools

Whether residential, industrial or commercial, all building types use some form of electricity to power a wide range of modern conveniences. Electricians are responsible for inspecting, installing and maintaining the circuitry and equipment required for the electrical systems we use every day. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor projections, the demand for well-trained electricians will rise by at least 12 percent by 2018. Professional electricians in Texas can expect to earn an average of $41,570, a year. There are several schools in the state that provide high-quality training for aspiring electricians.
  1. Odessa College

    • Odessa College offers an associate in applied science degree program in electrical technology with specialization options in motors, controls, programmable controllers and computer repair. Core requirements include circuitry, national codes and regulations, programmable controllers, motor controls and distribution systems. Short certificates in basic and advanced electrical technology, industrial technology and electronics technology are also available.

    North Texas Electrical Training Center

    • The North Texas Electrical Training Center provides a joint apprenticeship and training program that is affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and North Lake College of the Dallas County Community College District. Course topics include conduit bending, circuits, blueprint reading, transformers, motor controls, safety protocols and national electrical codes. Several courses will soon be available through online distance learning. Students receive 8,000 hours of hands-on, on-the-job training as apprentices within professional construction firms.

    South Plains College

    • South Plains College offers an associate of applied science degree program in electrical and power transmission technology. This two-year, four-semester program combines general education requirements in math, English composition, computer literacy and business communications with both theoretical and hands-on preparation for a career as an electrician. Course topics include electrical theory, safety precautions, motor control, the national electric code, regulators, transformers, transmission, distribution operations, line construction and wiring for residential, commercial and industrial settings. A certificate of proficiency program is also available.

    Houston Community College

    • Houston Community College provides two certificate programs for aspiring electricians. The one-semester electrical helper option is comprised of courses in electrical calculations, electrical safety standards, tools, the national electrical code, introductory electrical theory, residential wiring and commercial wiring. The three-semester certificate program in electrical power technology extends upon the shorter certificate program with additional coursework in motor controls, programmable controllers, industry certification and professional fieldwork.
