Oregon Schools for American Sign Language

American Sign Language, said to be the fourth most widely used language in the United States, has become an increasingly popular field of study on college campuses. In the state of Oregon, several schools now offer programs in ASL studies. Portland Community College has a two-year program designed to prepare the student to become a professional interpreter, and the University of Oregon also offers two years of instruction in the language. Western Oregon University offers the greatest number of classes and is the only institution in the state that awards a full bachelor's degree in American Sign Language studies.

This two year program awards the student an associate of applied science degree and graduation requires the completion of an internship with a professional translator. The Portland Community College program prides itself on its connections to the Portland deaf community, offering ample opportunities for students to gain real-life experience working in schools and local businesses.

    Western Oregon University
