American Sign Language, commonly abbreviated ASL, is an unspoken form of communication that is the first language of many hearing-impaired Americans.     • Washington State University offers a two-course American Sign Language program through the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences. American Sign Language I, the first course in the series, explores deaf culture and teaches students basic ASL vocabulary. American Sign Language II explores the language more deeply, teaching conversation skills while giving students a better understanding of deaf culture. Students receive eight credit hours upon completion of the two-course series.

    Seattle Central Community College

    • Seattle Central Community College offers an Interpreter Training program for students working toward a career as an interpreter for the deaf, as well as students who simply want to learn American Sign Language. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a transferable Associate of Applied Science degree.

      The program explores deaf culture, American Sign Language interpretation, transliteration and comparative linguistics. The two-year program awards 94 credit hours in full. Classes, seminars and internship opportunities are part of the program.

    Spokane Falls Community College

    • Spokane Falls Community College offers an Interpreter Training program for students interested in pursuing a career with American Sign Language. Upon completion of the program, students receive certification as a professional sign language interpreter. The program is transferable to a four-year institution. Spokane Falls offers an Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Sciences degree, depending on the course schedule you design.

      For either degree program, students will take American Sign Language courses, study deaf culture and learn record-keeping and other small business studies. Classrooms and the on-campus language lab provide the setting for learning.
