Direct your browser to "etaxuniversity.com." Become oriented with the eTax University website. Look at the different tabs and review the information under each of them; becoming familiar with the site will enable you to find the resources you are looking for faster. Download the "Procedures and Training Manual" for an overview of the e-file process.
Open the "Training" page. Here you will find a list of five video lessons. Watch lesson one, "What We Do" and take the corresponding quiz. Do this for the remaining four videos, taking the related quiz at the end of each video.
Click on the "Practice" button. On this page, you will find 12 practice tax returns to test your expertise. Each practice return has examples of both single individuals and families, along with their related tax information. You will find a variety of situations, similar to the ones found everyday in tax preparation. The different forms include W2, 1099 and tuition statements, among others.
Print the practice returns or write out the information with a pen on a separate piece of paper. Use the personal information included on the practice form to complete the returns and calculate the refund amount. Use a calculator to help with the math.
Compare the refund amounts you calculated on the practice returns with the answers provided. If your refund amount is wrong, backtrack on the forms to see where you went wrong and correct it. This will help prevent future mistakes.
Open the "Tutorials" page and watch the short videos. You will find videos on how to start a tax return and how to make any amendments to existing tax returns. You will also learn how to estimate the amount of a return, as well as how to check the status of returns that have already been submitted.
Use the resources under the "Reference" tab when completing tax returns. There are forms available such as the extension and amendment forms, along with useful information like important phone numbers and addresses. Always keep the IRS hotline number handy for any further questions you may have in completing tax returns.
