American Sign Language (ASL) is the most widely spoken sign language in the United States. Individuals with full or partial hearing loss use ASL so that they may communicate without the use of speech. People without hearing impairments also learn ASL so that they may communicate with, or translate for, the hard of hearing. Sign languages allows individuals to converse using their sense of sight rather than their sense of sound, and involves the manipulation of one's body to form symbols representing words. ASL is taught at a number of educational institutions all over the United States, including in the state of Virginia, and can be learned by enrolling in an ASL course.
