Individuals seeking to take the GED test in New York must be a resident of the state for at least 30 days prior to scheduling the test. You can establish residency with a driver's license, identification card or New York State issued identification. Your identification must show proof of your name, address, birthday and signature. The identification you present must also be valid.
You must be at least 19 years old to complete the GED test or 16 years old and have been out of high school for at least one full year. This means that you can not be enrolled for 12 full months prior to registering for the GED exam. If you are under the age of 19, you will be required to show proof that you have been out of school for one year, show proof that you have been enrolled in an alternative education program, or verify that you have been accepted into the armed forces, job corps or college.
There is no fee for taking or retaking the GED test in New York. You do, however, have to wait a minimum of 60 days between failing any part of the exam and retaking the test.
You must show proof that you are eligible to take the GED test. Individuals who have been confined to a drug rehabilitation center, children and family services, jail or department of corrections, or a patient in a hospital in the state or county of New York must provide a completed verification form. Homeschooled students must provide proof of school and have an Attachment B form completed. Individuals who are between 16 and 18 years old will likely require a verification form to prove their eligibility to complete the GED exam. These forms will vary given your circumstance.
