Confirm your eligibility to register for GED classes. Although eligibility requirements vary by state, most states require students to be at least 16 years old, a state resident and not be presently enrolled in a diploma program. Students under 18 years old are usually required to also provide a withdrawal verification letter from the last high school attended or a letter from a school, employer or a military recruiter confirming the student's need to pursue the GED program.
Contact your state Department of Education by phone or email and inquire about the availability of GED classes. Between full-time employment and other time commitments, many adult learners find it more convenient to take GED classes online. You can also check the agency's website, since some agencies maintain an online database of GED class locations. The Educational Resource Organization's directory website, wdcrobcolp01.ed.gov, provides links to all state Department of Education organizations throughout the U.S. and its territories.
Visit the American Council on Education's website. Enter your five-digit zip code into the testing site locator to find a facility near you. Contact the agency and request information regarding GED classes. Many exam sites may also be in close proximity to GED classes and some facilities even refer students to these locations for exam preparation.
Contact local community colleges in your area. Many schools offer GED classes or Adult Basic Education classes at these educational institutions, either free of charge or at a reduced rate.
